If you and your partner would like to start a family, please think of sexually transmitted infections (STI) and if possible have a check-up.

Sexually transmitted infections are passed from one person to another through sex.
STIs can affect your chances of getting pregnant as well as your baby.
Common things that you notice when you have STI include
- Unusual discharge from the vagina or penis
- Pain when urinating.
- Blisters and sores around the genitals
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
- Small growths around your genitals
- A rash
It is important to know that most of the STI would not cause any of these complaints or symptoms. Also, the complains would be so mild that you would notice it. Which means you can have STI and not know about it and pass it to your partner.
If STIs are not treated they can cause
- Infertility
- Be passed on to your baby
Health problems for you and your baby during (and after) pregnancy like miscarriage, premature birth, or still birth (where the baby dies during pregnancy)
The common STIs are gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, genital warts, genital herpes, syphilis, and HIV.

The good news is that most STIs can be treated. Visit your doctor if you have the symptoms and get treated as early as possible.
